How to network and build relationships as a freelancer

Introduction

Building relationships as a solopreneur can be a little daunting sometimes, but let’s face it, Freelancers at times, prefer to be hunched over a laptop in a secluded corner. Networking makes building strong connections possible, and this is the lifeblood of any thriving Freelancing career. They open doors to new projects, offer invaluable insight based on their experiences, and give a sense of belonging, no matter how little. This means that networking is important, as no man is an island!

What it takes to network and build relevant relationships:

  • Step out of your comfort zone!

Comfortability is the enemy of progress. Step out of your comfort zone, but don’t stray too far either. Leverage online communities like Facebook groups, LinkedIn forums, and discussions relevant to your industry. Engage actively. Attend industry events and liaise with potential clients, attend local business networking events; volunteer in your community and even beyond if you can. You would be amazed that connections close to home would bring about surprising opportunities.

  • Be a Giver and not just a receiver

Don’t be in a hurry to only get. Learn to give before you get. Share valuable resources, offer advice, and pay attention to people’s challenges. Focus on quality rather than quantity. This is because building genuine connections is more valuable than a massive but disconnected network. Introduce people in your circle to quality people that both sides would benefit from. This showcases  your value and expands your reach organically.

  • Don’t joke with Social Media

Build an online presence. Social media is a platform that allows for greatness. Optimize your profiles, and showcase your expertise. Engage authentically. Be real with your audience, share insightful content, and use relevant hashtags to increase visibility. Don’t just follow anyone. Strategically connect with individuals you truly want to connect with.

  • Nurturing the relationships

Be patient and consistent. Don’t be fixed only on making sales. Follow up, send personalized messages, offer advice, and celebrate their successes. Consistent engagement is key. Your network is there to support you when you are struggling. Leverage on their expertise and ask for help when needed.

Conclusion

Your next big project may be in the hands of a new relationship. Understanding how to network and leveraging on them would help you better as a freelancer. Now, network with intentionality and build a support system that will fuel your freelance success! Never underestimate anyone. See you at the top!
